Oh Beiber, You Didn't...

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/13/world/middleeast/13bieber.html?_r=1&emc=tnt&tntemail0=y

I have no words.
Meaning i have a million things to say, but why is Justin Beiber a young pop singer making the front page of the New York Times. There has got to be more interesting news. Or maybe this is just the kind of interesting news that the public craves? Politics meets pop culture?

  1. Although the article attempts to show this from a somewhat political point of view, it's clear that the only reason he made the front page is because he will sell this morning's paper a whole lot better than something actually deserving of the front page!

  2. This is a perfect front page story. It has soft news for the people who like that and it also has some real news which justifies it being on the front page. Not tangential is that it is possible that millions of teenage girls are buying the NY Times solely to clip out the picture of Justin and place it on their walls, enabling the NY Times to increase their revenue and sell more papers.

  3. The movie Idiocracy is about a guy that finds himself in America, 500 hundred in the future. The premise of the movie is that everyone is really stupid and everything is really dumbed down. There's a scene where the main character, played by Luke Wilson, who's the only smart person left on the planet, picks up a magazine issue of "US News and World Report," only to find that it has been renamed "HOT NAKED CHICKS and World Report." It seems that even today many papers have already begun using this tactic to sell papers- and it makes the movie seem entirely plausible.

  4. I agree with Dina, although Justin Bieber is probably not worthy of being on the front page of the New York Times, it will stop people on the streets who are curious to know why he is on the front page and will influence them to buy the paper. Hey- as long as their reading the paper right?
